I drove straight to Blevins this morning. They were having connectivity issues following the storms the other day. Turns out, they had a pair of media converters knocked out. Swapped the devices, and the network came back up, humming along.
Had a separate issue in a classroom. Teacher could not connect. After some sneakernet, we discovered a wire had come loose from the switch.
In yet another classroom, teacher could not connect. Turned out to be a bad end that plugs into a cat5 coupler. Replaced the end and user was back up and running.
Set up an Airport Extreme. After much troubleshooting, it turned out the switch in that room had TWO bad ports - and we just happened to have picked those two while installing/troubleshooting. Figures.
At the office, I worked on creating a new workshop survey. This year, surveys will be online, accessible via desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. We will have QR codes posted for folks to scan and take the survey. We will also provide paper copies of the survey should some folks decide not to do it online.
Helped Phoebe with playing AudioNote files on her computer, then I recorded a podcast for the SWAEC@Technology series. That can be found: http://davidinark.podomatic.com/
Met with the Supt of Blevins to give a summary of what happened there. Also talked with Supt of Fouke regarding new position they are looking to fill. he had asked me to help review applicants, etc.
This site serves as public record of my activities as Technology Coordinator for Southwest Arkansas Education Co-op. This site will be used in conjunction with travel forms, calendars, minutes and other pertinent data, when used together, to build a robust view of the services I perform which help my main office, participating school districts, statewide initiatives, and the furthering of K12 education in Arkansas.

Week of January 27 UPDATE
Wednesday - Traveled to Bradley to help troubleshoot several issues and run a cable in one of their labs. We had to install DyKnow monitoring software, which turned out to be much more involved than we had anticipated. In fact, we ended up removing the installation at least once (I think maybe twice) before we got it right. Let me just say that I miss the days when thousand-dollar software came with a PRINTED manual. We had to locate and replace a wire that was causing a video issue in the distance learning lab. We also looked at several other technical issues as well.
Thursday - I drove to Fouke to help troubleshoot network issues. The tech and I looked at their backup configuration and made sure that it was backing up everything it was supposed to be. We went through the Middle School trying to find a possible network loopback, but did not find one. There is something going on, and I let the tech know that the co-op would be getting an Etherscope soon and that I would bring it to troubleshoot as soon as it arrived. in the meantime, I offered suggestions for manually hunting down the problem. The "old school" method is to unplug cables one at a time until things settle down. If EVERYTHING is unplugged before the network settles, then plug things back in one at a time and monitor the situation. It is long, tedious work with a lot of network connections to go through.
They have Xirrus wireless and one array keeps rebooting itself, but does not log the boot loop in its diagnostics. I can only assume that the system is rebooting before the diags can be recorded.
The tech asked me to research the following: 1) Cloud-based backup for Netware, 2) Multi-sheet document scanner for record keeping, 3) Info regarding migration from Groupwise to Google Apps for Education. I will have those to them next week.
Friday - Went to Blevins to help troubleshoot network issues and other problems. They had a lightning strike take out one of their T1s. The telco replaced the line, but the internet connection was no where near up to speed (running about 26k/sec). We had DIS on the line and Warren helped us narrow down a couple issues. One issue surfaced in the form of the video LAN and the Data LAN being on the same physical network. After a LOT of sneakernet, we found the problem (a wire plugged into the wrong place) and fixed that. As for internet connectivity, it turns out the line was not provisioned correctly on the telco end. Aonce both of those were resolved, the district was running at near 3-meg capacity.
Additionally, I had a list of things the techs wanted me to look over, so I did. A MacBook had a CD stuck in the drive and it would not eject. The system was "hosed" and would not boot beyond the spinning grey circle. Holding the EJECT button whole booting did not work. Holding COMMAND-OPTION-F-O never put me in Firmware Mode, so that was no good. I finally took a stiff piece of cardboard and stuck it in the drive. When the system tried to boot, the CD was held in place by the cardboard. The system tried to read the disc 3-4 times. After that, the CD eventually ejected from the system.
I helped set the password expiration period to 90 days (it had been set to 42 days).
I helped set up two printers as DHCP reservations.
I showed the tech how to DENY requests for IP addresses in the DHCP server module. I love that feature of Server 2008 R2! Wahoo! They had a LOT of iPhone, iPod, Android, etc users snagging up IP addresses.
We worked on a couple other issues, then I headed to the office.
At the office, I worked on updating the Operations Guide for the Conference Room - added a cheat sheet for multiple screen scenarios. I posted the 2012-2013 DL Calendar to the ARDL portal, answered phone calls, emails, voicemails, etc.

Thursday
Had the November area tech meeting. We covered IDEAS, MyEvent updates, new wireless in Co-op main building, iPads and bulk purchasing apps, had a vendor discussion/presentation regarding maintenance and E-Rate. This was done over CIV with a direct connection to the vendor's system.
After the meeting, several techs stayed to work on disaster recovery and/or tech plans.
I adjusted the time and timer settings for our parking lot lights. i also installed a new access point in the "attic"
Friday's plan: upgrade the active directory on my 2003 servers in order to prepare for the move to the new 2008 server. Once that is done, I plan to fire up the new server and start moving data to the new box.

Recapping... 10/19-10/26 and 10/31-11/13
In addition to daily duties, these are the highlights of days gone by:
*Note: At various times during this period, I was out sick. I have emails confirming this, as well as emails detailing some tasks not specifically outlined here. i will happily share any of that information with personnel in authority as needed/requested.
10/19 - Participated in the Prescott Schools Technology Committee Meeting.
10/24 - Worked with Blevins to get printers working at the district. Turned out to be an issue with wireless access points handing out "bad" addresses on the network. Resolved all but one a/p issue, but that a/p could not actually be physically located. Resolved issue in software, rebooted workstations. Set up reservations in dhcp. Then traveled to Fouke to work on various Server 2008 issues, tech plan items, and other issues.
10/31 - out sick
11/02 - Went to Txk ECH to work on laptop. Ended up bringing laptop back for complete factory restore.
11/03 - Lewisville ECH and Bradley Schools - Went to Lewisville to troubleshoot computer problems. Resolved settings in Adobe in order to make SEAS work via web browser. Also installed/set-up SmartBoard. From there, went to Bradley in order to resolve connectivity issues. Like Blevins (above), we found wireless access points handing out "bad" ip addresses. Evidently, a power surge over the previous night had reset the access points to hand out ip addresses. in one case, we resolved an ongoing issue (thought it had been an infected machine, but turned out to be an access point handing out ips). We also looked at other server issues, worked on e-rate (specifically BEAR form info), and took care of local work orders.
11/04 - Returned the Txk ECH laptop to the classroom, reinstalled the printer and tested everything. Looks great.
11/08 - Talked with Paul Glen, CEO of LeadingGeeks regarding communication differences between "techies" and "non-techies" for a book he is writing with a partner. The interview/conversation lasted about an hour. I also evaluated Xirrus and AeroHive for enterprise wireless solutions in our main building. Evaluated a couple quotes for Crestron installation of a control panel system for our conference rooms.
11/09 - Met with Lindy and Phoebe regarding several tech issues and topics. Ultimately decided to table the Crestron/automation project and move forward with AeroHive.
11/10 - Monthly Board meeting. Presented "app of the month." Covered FlipBoard and "This Day in History."
11/11 - Met with Lindy, Phoebe and Trish regarding TIE schedules and meeting agendas. Installed CWT on iPad and iPod for workshop. Worked on Operations Guides for various presentation rooms at co-op. Ordered parts to help clean up the wiring in the main conference center.

10/07/11 - 10/18/11
10/7 - Had an aerohive demo for possible wireless solution at the co-op main building. Took care of general troubleshooting and other daily tasks.
10/10/11 - Installed new CIV systems at Blevins as part of RUS Grant.
10/11/11 - Installed new CIV systems at Prescott as part of RUS Grant. Also worked with Doug on a couple Sharepoint issues that seem to center on a webpart for slideshows. The java script used evidently clashes in some systems with the code for rich-text editing. Working to find another slideshow solution.
10/12/11 - Met with the Business, Technology, and Education Advisory Council for UACCH. Had a very open, frank conversation regarding skills needed, classes and topics to be taught. Met with Curtis Stout Company to evaluate a possible Crestron solution for the co-ops main conference center.
10/13/11 - Met with various staff and performed daily tech activities, troubleshooting etc.
10/14/11 - Went to Bradley to help with various issues: SmartBoard, graphics issues, wireless, and other areas of needed assistance.
10/17/11 - Performed daily tech activites, upgraded iPad to iOS5, worked on two laptops and replaced a desktop. Checked one of the smartphones for problems. Temporary solution was to disable shortcut keys. Phone is eligible for upgrade/replacement.
10/18/11 - Replaced a bulb in Hope ECH classroom, present to the board the "App of the Month" - AudioNote, examined an older laptop for possible replacement.

08/17/2011
Started the morning in a meeting in which I found myself pointing most of my fingers at myself, then to Fouke for a day of troubleshooting Xirrus wireless, dns issues, dhcp issues, etc. Think we have them worked out. :-) Tracie will let me know, I'm sure! :-) Then, on way home, AT&T showed up at office to install additional bandwidth. Our building is the LAST possible connection on that leg, and one of the t1's failed to light up. He'll be back in the AM to try and "boost it" (whatever that is in T1 terms).

8/10/11
Went to the office in order to help get a couple workshops up and going. After that, headed to Fouke.
At Fouke, I helped correct a few issues with the server - dns, dhcp, looked into some sophos issues. Then went to the business lab to determine why some machines were not joining her domain. After troubleshooting dns, tcpip, forwarding, lookups etc, I finally found the culprit - incorrect subnet mask on her server. The district had recently switched subnets and this server still had the old mask. Once that was fixed, the machines joined in with no problems! Awesome.
After that, helped troubleshoot some issues with a new Xirrus installation. Well, tried to help anyway. After poking around inside the configuration program for several arrays, we managed to get everything to look correctly as far as configs, but still have issues in one building with at least two (if not three) arrays. We even pushed the radios to 5ghz-only mode and that did not work. I called our local sales guy who said he would call the Xirrus reps and get someone to fix it. The tech had already spent more than 10 hours of phone time and webex time trying to solve the issue (among other issues).
During my time at Fouke, I also took several phone calls - from Blevins and Bradley - regarding troubleshooting etc. i also handled a multitude of text messages throughout the day relating to various school issues from various districts (blevins, fouke, the co-op itself, mainly).
I helped the district set up a template for active directory users and set up shares for home folders. Oh, also repartitioned a drive to make better use of the storage space.
On the way home, I spent time on the phone with the rep who sold Xirrus, talked to my director, and had conversations with Blevins and our DL coordinator.

Tuesday
NOTE: This was actually created on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. I don't know why it never posted. Gotta love technology...
Wow, you would think by now that I'd have some cool, creative naming scheme for my daily entries. No such luck, my friends!
Tuesday started off with setting up the CIV room for a small conference between our co-op and a handful of others. That was followed by a weird phone situation in which I had managed to connect the wrong extension for one of our offices. That was readily fixed, though. I love our new phone system layout: go into the tech closet, move a jumper from one extension to another and voila!
We've got a big Common Core preso here on Friday, so I set up with triple-wide room so that the computer image would be displayed on three projectors at the same time. The units we have feature a "piggy back" option and I think it may be time to look into making that a permanent feature. As it is right now, I come out of the presenter's station into a 4-way splitter. The signal is then split between the three rooms by cables running across the floor. It looks ugly. I am generally more of a "function over form" kinda guy, but this setup is starting to make me cringe a little. I'm adding the changeover to my 'to-do' list!
The Director asked me to help with some half-fold note cards, so she and I worked together to get the right feel and fit. That was pretty easy to do in Publisher. I'm not a pro at Publisher by any means, but simple things are fun to generate when the program makes it easy to handle.
Evidently, there are going to be after-work aerobics classes on the third floor. This means that I needed to install a DVD/VCR attached to the big screen TV we brought from the old building. Easy peasy.
I fielded several 'helpdesk' phone calls from a couple of the area schools. Once of these regarded login issues with the Ideas portal. I offered to call the AETN helpdesk to get the logins fixed, but the administrator said she wanted to see how far she got, but that she would employ my assistance if she hit any snags.
Another phone issue came up regarding several machines showing a BSOD. The only way to power down was to unplug the machine from the wall. After a bit of conversation, we determined that several folks had left their computers on during the two-week holiday and that power surges during that break mostly likely contributed to the BSOD. (A snarky aside: perhaps someone was lighting fireworks too close to the school, thus sending the computers into a tizzy... /re: thousands of birds falling from Arkansas skies/)
I helped that same tech with a wireless issue - namely, we downloaded the Linksys WAP54G setup spftware so that she could find wireless devices on her network and manage those from her office without needing to physically visit each one. It's nice in theory. The problem is that the software doesn't give enough time for the units to respond during the initial launch. The software then only sees a handful of units at a time. It is a bit frustrating.
After the PIA review with USAC for E-rate, I received a letter extending our refund request deadline. I now have to submit a BEAR form in order to get my discounted funding from our phone bills. I've never done BEAR before (we usually just get the discounts and do not fuss with reimbursements), so that is adventure unfolding before me.

Monday, Tuesday, and most of Wednesday
Monday - I spent most of the day at Blevins School District. I used my Fox-and-Hound to help located a few network wires that seemed to go "nowhere fast." Turned out they really did go somewhere, but they weren't plugged in to anything. We remedied that. I also worked on some wireless issue they were having in one of the buildings. Turns out the wireless router was defective (most likely after a recent storm).
While working on the wireless, I spent time talking with/working with the Instructional Technology Specialist about her new job, duties, etc.
After I returned to the Co-op, I answered phone calls and emails from vendors and techs until quitting time, at which point I went with my boss to her house to try and get her home network set up so she could work from home. This had been working in the past, but for some reason quit working. After several hours, we decided to call it quits, take a break and approach it again on Wednesday.
Tuesday - I spent the day at Bradley schools troubleshooting several issues, ranging from the switchover from server-based Renaissance Learning tools to the web-based version, several laptop/networking issues, connectivity issues in several classrooms (and HS library). The tech and I checked out several projectors with apparent color wheel problems (a known issue) and one projector that seems to have a bad extra-long VGA cable. I will return to the district to help narrow that problem down at a later date.
I also worked in the Early Childhood room, setting up a new computer for the students to use, troubleshooting viruses/malware, and setting up one of the student computers for printing.
Before heading to Bradley Tuesday morning, I helped get the lab set up for Neil Gibson to host a data workshop.
Wednesday - Helped set up the conference room for a presenter (a/v system, internet, dvd playback, etc). Worked on several server-related issues (trying to get ISA server to route traffice to certain web front-ends). At lunch, I went to the boss' house and was able to fix the connectivity issue so she can now work from home.
At 2:00, I got a call from the Hope early childhood program about a database issue in regards to Batelle Reporting. Headed out to see what I could do to help fix it.
